The Swiss are undersupplied with various micronutrients

Can it be that in our prosperous country with its almost limitless supply of food, there is a lack of nutrients? Time and again we hear that an additional supply of vital substances is unnecessary and that a balanced diet is sufficient. In vital substance medicine, however, this has been contradicted for years. Unfortunately, our food no longer contains sufficient amounts of all the micronutrients that are important for healthy bodily functions. In addition, the need for these substances is increasing with our current lifestyle and the increasing environmental stresses (stress situations for the body). The most conspicuous and serious problem in Switzerland, regardless of age group, is vitamin D deficiency.

The Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) has recently published an official brochure: “How well is the Swiss population supplied with micronutrients?” (Swiss Nutrition Bulletin 2021). There it is shown that there is indeed an undersupply of various vital substances in our population, especially among older women.

The brochure states, among other things, that the following vitamins and minerals are below the recommendation: Vitamin D, folate, pantothenic acid, potassium, calcium, iodine as well as iron in women. Magnesium is also in short supply, and men’s zinc intake is also low. The intake of pantothenic acid and vitamin B6 in older people and vitamin B12 in the youngest and oldest age groups of women should also be kept in mind. Older women aged 65 and over tend to have the lowest micronutrient intakes compared to younger age groups (except for vitamins A, C and D). Regional differences in dietary habits are partly reflected in the intake of individual micronutrients and suggest that interventions to improve the nutritional situation and micronutrient intake should be targeted not only by gender and age groups, but also regionally. This report highlights only selected micronutrients from the vast amount of data available from menuCH
