Vitamin K2: importance and sources

Vitamin K2 (also known as menaquinone) is an essential, fat-soluble vitamin. The best sources of vitamin K2 are cheese made from raw milk from grass-fed cows, fermented plant foods such as sauerkraut or natto (fermented soya from Japan).

Vitamin K1 and K2

Of the various K vitamins, only vitamins K1 and K2 are important for humans. Vitamin K1 is found in green plants, where it plays a role in photosynthesis. Vitamin K2 or menaquinone is produced by bacteria and is less commonly found in food.

Vitamin K2 should be taken with vitamin D3, as the two substances work together.

How Vitamin K2 is produced

Vitamin K2 is produced by fermentation using natural microorganisms. The vitamin K2 is then concentrated, purified and stabilised.

The natural fermentation process described above produces 97% pure vitamin K2. This is an exceptionally good value.

Of this 97% vitamin K2, 99.8% is present in the desired form MK-7, all-trans. MK-7 stands for the length of the side chain, ‘trans’ describes the spatial arrangement of the molecule (trans = natural, biologically active form, cis = biologically inactive form).

Vitamin K2 Vida contains only vitamin K2 (menaquinone) in the form ‘MK7 trans’. Our raw material MenaQ7® is characterised by the following advantages:

Bioavailability of cis and trans

The cis form of vitamin K2 is considered biologically inactive. Depending on the manufacturing process, undesirable cis-isomers can form and the product can no longer be labelled as all-trans*. Chemical solvents are often used in the preparation of K2 vitamins, some of which may remain in the product. Vitamin K2 is only maximally bioavailable if 99% of it is present in the trans variant (all-trans).
