Folat

A vitamin from the B group

Folate is a hydrophilic (water-soluble) vitamin from the B group (also vitamin B9). One often hears the term folic acid, which is the synthetic form of the B vitamin. in 1941, the isolation of a growth-stimulating and anti-anaemic (preventing anaemia) factor was achieved. Today, however, it is known that this factor, originally called folic acid, does not occur in nature in this form and that the isolation was an artificial product. Folate deficiency is widespread and is particularly noticeable in the red blood cells (folate deficiency anaemia). Folate is involved in various processes, such as the division and formation of new cells, and it is also important in the metabolism of certain amino acids . Especially if you want to become pregnant and during pregnancy and breastfeeding, folate is very important and the need is increased. A deficiency in the first weeks of pregnancy can result in damage to the child’s central nervous system (neural tube defect). Folate is found in higher amounts in the following foods, for example: Spinach and other dark green leafy vegetables, oranges, nuts, beans, poultry and meat, as well as whole grain products. However, if there is an increased need, consuming these foods alone will not be sufficient. In this case, please consult your doctor.
